Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Progreso TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Progreso TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Progreso TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Progreso TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Progreso TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Progreso TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Progreso home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Progreso TX ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Progreso TX area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Progreso TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Progreso TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Progreso medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Progreso TX residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Progreso TX area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
