Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Queen City TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Queen City TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Queen City TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Queen City TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Queen City TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Queen City TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Queen City home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Queen City TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Queen City TX area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Queen City TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have associations with Queen City TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Queen City medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Queen City TX home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Queen City TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
