Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Red Oak TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Red Oak TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Red Oak TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Red Oak TX clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Red Oak TXAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Red Oak TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Red Oak home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Red Oak TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Red Oak TX area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Red Oak TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Red Oak TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Red Oak medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Red Oak TX home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Red Oak TX area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
