Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Richards TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Richards TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Richards TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Richards TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Richards TXAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Richards TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Richards home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Richards TX ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Richards TX area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Richards TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Richards TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Richards healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Richards TX home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Richards TX area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
