Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Roxton TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Roxton TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Roxton TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Roxton TX hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Roxton TXAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Roxton TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Roxton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Roxton TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Roxton TX area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Roxton TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Roxton TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Roxton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Roxton TX residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Roxton TX area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
