Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Shiner TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Shiner TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Shiner TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Shiner TX clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Shiner TXAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Shiner TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Shiner home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Shiner TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Shiner TX area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Shiner TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Shiner TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Shiner health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Shiner TX home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shiner TX area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Shiner, Texas

Shiner is a city in Lavaca County, Texas, United States. The town was named after Henry B. Shiner who donated 250 acres (1.0 km2) for railroad right of way. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,069.

In 1885, a post office called Half Moon was opened at a trading post near the present site of Shiner. In 1887, Henry B. Shiner donated 250 acres for a depot and right-of-way for the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway which bypassed Half Moon and was built through Henry B. Shiner's donated land and the town grew around these transportation facilities. The town initially called itself "New Half Moon" but in 1888 the town's name was changed to Shiner and the town was incorporated in 1890.[3] Czech and German immigrants soon became the dominant ethnic groups, and Shiner developed a cohesive Czech community that still heavily influences the town's culture. Ranching was an important part of the town's history.[4] Historically notable families of the area are the Wolters and Welhausen families which the "Edwin Wolters Memorial Museum" and the "Shiner Welhausen Park" are named after respectively.

Shiner is the home of the Spoetzl Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in Texas. The brewery is most well known for producing Shiner Bock, a dark German/Czech-style beer that is now distributed in 49 states.[5]
