Sonographer Work Description

Spicewood TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Spicewood TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Spicewood TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Spicewood TX clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Spicewood TXAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Spicewood TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Spicewood home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Spicewood TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Spicewood TX area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Spicewood TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Spicewood TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Spicewood medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Spicewood TX home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Spicewood TX area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
