Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Draper UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Draper UT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Draper UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Draper UT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Utah or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Draper UTAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Draper UT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Draper home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Draper UT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Draper UT area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Draper UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have associations with Draper UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Draper medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Draper UT home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Draper UT area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
