Sonographer Occupation Description

Fairview UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Fairview UT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Fairview UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Fairview UT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Utah or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Fairview UTAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fairview UT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Fairview home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Fairview UT ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Fairview UT area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fairview UT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Fairview UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Fairview health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Fairview UT residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Fairview UT area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Fairview, Utah

Located at the confluence of the San Pitch River and Cottonwood Creek, Fairview is the largest town in the northeast end of the Sanpete Valley. Founded in 1859, soon after the resettlement of nearby Mount Pleasant, Fairview was one of the first new towns established during the second wave of Mormon settlement in Sanpete County.

Impressed with the possibilities of the area while gathering wild hay there in early 1859, James Naylor Jones, Isaac Young Vance, Warren P. Brady and Jehu Cox wrote to Brigham Young asking for permission to create a settlement. The pragmatic church president responded, "If there is water for thirty families, you have my permission." At an organizing meeting held on October 1, 1859 in Mt. Pleasant, James N. Jones was chosen to lead a band of about twenty families interested in the new colonizing opportunity. The town site was surveyed and by the end of 1860 a large log meeting house had been completed to house church, school, and social functions. Rows of poplars were planted, streets were graded, and fences were constructed as Fairview took on the appearance of the ubiquitous "Mormon Village." In 1864 the town obtained a post office and forsook its original name of North Bend in favor of the more descriptive name Fairview, because it "commands an excellent view of the great granary extending south even beyond Manti, thirty miles distant."

During the Black Hawk War of the mid-1860s, some Fairview residents moved to Mt. Pleasant for protection after a few men were killed in deadly skirmishes. Those who remained complied with Brigham Young's instructions to build a fort. By the end of 1866 a thick rock wall ten feet high enclosed the center of town. Within a few years, the conflict was essentially over and aggressive settlement and community development commenced. In the course of the ensuing decade, Fairview's population burgeoned to more than 1,000, making it the fourth largest in Sanpete by 1880. In 1900 and again in 1940 the town exceeded 1,700 people; however in 1980 the population was just 900, ranking Fairview sixth in size among the county's nineteen communities.
