Sonographer Work Description

Goshen UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Goshen UT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Goshen UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Goshen UT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Utah or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Goshen UTAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Goshen UT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Goshen home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Goshen UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Goshen UT area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Goshen UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Goshen UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Goshen health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Goshen UT home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Goshen UT area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
