Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Gunnison UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Gunnison UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Gunnison UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Gunnison UT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Utah or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Gunnison UTAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gunnison UT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Gunnison home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Gunnison UT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Gunnison UT area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Gunnison UT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Gunnison UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Gunnison medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Gunnison UT residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gunnison UT area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
