Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Paragonah UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Paragonah UT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Paragonah UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Paragonah UT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Utah or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Paragonah UTAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Paragonah UT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Paragonah home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Paragonah UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Paragonah UT area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Paragonah UT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Paragonah UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Paragonah healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Paragonah UT residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Paragonah UT area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
