Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Payson UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Payson UT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Payson UT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Payson UT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Utah or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Payson UTAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Payson UT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Payson home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Payson UT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Payson UT area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Payson UT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Payson UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Payson health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Payson UT home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Payson UT area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
