Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Cambridge VT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cambridge VT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Cambridge VT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Cambridge VT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Vermont or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Cambridge VTAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cambridge VT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Cambridge home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Cambridge VT ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cambridge VT area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Cambridge VT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Cambridge VT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Cambridge medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Vermont healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Cambridge VT home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cambridge VT area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Cambridge, Vermont

Granted on November 7, 1780, Cambridge was chartered on August 13, 1781 to Samuel Robinson, John Fassett, Jr., Jonathan Frost and 64 others. It was first settled in 1783 by John Safford from Piermont, New Hampshire.[3] The intervales proved good but rough, best for grazing livestock. By 1839, the town had about 7,000 sheep.[4] The Lamoille River offered water power for watermills. Industries included one woolen factory, one tannery, one gristmill, plus several sawmills and cabinet shops.[5]

Cambridge and neighboring Johnson were together known as the King's College Tract, being created by Lieutenant Governor Cadwallader Colden by authority of British King George III in 1764. The King's College Tract was reserved for the eventual establishment of a university on the site. The place name Cambridge suggests Cambridge University in England. Johnson, the other town in the King's College Grant, was named for William Samuel Johnson.[6]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 63.7 square miles (164.9 km2), of which 63.7 square miles (164.9 km2) is land and 0.02% is water. Cambridge is drained by the Lamoille River.
