Bassett VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bassett VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure

  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Bassett VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Bassett VA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bassett VAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bassett VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Bassett home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bassett VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bassett VA area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bassett VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Bassett VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Bassett health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Bassett VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bassett VA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
