Sonographer Work Description

Bergton VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bergton VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Bergton VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Bergton VA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bergton VAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bergton VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bergton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Bergton VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bergton VA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bergton VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Bergton VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bergton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Bergton VA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bergton VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Bergton, Virginia

Bergton, formerly Dovesville, is an unincorporated community located in Rockingham County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is located in George Washington National Forest, northeast of Timberville near the state border with West Virginia.[1]

In 1936, the village along with Cootes Store was affected by the Great Flood. The flood washed away many barns, cottages and other features in the area.[2] Bergton was originally known as Dovesville for the large number of Dove families in the region. A post office mandate changed the name to avoid confusion with the town of Covesville. In 1987 the Bergton Elementary School was closed due to dwindling enrollment.
