Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Brightwood VA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Brightwood VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Brightwood VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Brightwood health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Brightwood VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Brightwood VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
