Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Eagle Rock VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Eagle Rock VA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Eagle Rock VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Eagle Rock VA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Eagle Rock VAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Eagle Rock VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Eagle Rock home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Eagle Rock VA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Eagle Rock VA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Eagle Rock VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Eagle Rock VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Eagle Rock healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Eagle Rock VA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Eagle Rock VA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Eagle Rock, Virginia

It was the location of the kilns for making lime. Limestone was transported across the river via a tram system and then burned in the kilns to make lime. Old quarries and locally known Quarry Hill are located on either side of US 220. The Bessemer Archaeological Site, Phoenix Bridge and Roaring Run Furnace are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4]

At the end of the canal system, transportation was done by rail. Eagle Rock was the point of convergence of the Richmond and Alleghany Railroad (soon to be known as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and later CSX Transportation) and the Craig Valley Line, which ran to Surber Station and on to New Castle, Virginia.

The town is served by Botetourt County Public Schools. The town had its own high school until the late 1950s, when the Northern Botetourt high schools were all consolidated into the newly formed James River High School in neighboring Springwood. All public school students in Eagle Rock attend Eagle Rock Elementary, Central Academy Middle, and James River High.
