An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Edwardsville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Edwardsville VA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Edwardsville VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Edwardsville VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Edwardsville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Edwardsville VA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Edwardsville VA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
