  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Glen Lyn VA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whichever state you decide to practice in.

But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Glen Lyn home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Glen Lyn VA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Glen Lyn VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Glen Lyn VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Glen Lyn health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Glen Lyn VA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Glen Lyn VA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
