Horsepen VA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Horsepen VA, it’s time to begin the process of picking a college. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate instruction to become a skilled professional. And because a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of individuals will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are offered.

Sonographer Occupation Summary

Horsepen VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Horsepen VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Horsepen VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Horsepen VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Horsepen VAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Horsepen VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Horsepen home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Horsepen VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Horsepen VA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Horsepen VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Horsepen VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Horsepen healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Horsepen VA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Horsepen VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
