Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Ladysmith VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ladysmith VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Ladysmith VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Ladysmith VA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Ladysmith VAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Ladysmith VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Ladysmith home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Ladysmith VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ladysmith VA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Ladysmith VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Ladysmith VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Ladysmith healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Ladysmith VA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ladysmith VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
