One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Madison Heights VA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Madison Heights VA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Madison Heights VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Madison Heights VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Madison Heights health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Madison Heights VA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Madison Heights VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
