Middlebrook VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Middlebrook VA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Middlebrook VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Middlebrook VA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Middlebrook VAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Middlebrook VA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Middlebrook home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Middlebrook VA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Middlebrook VA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Middlebrook VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Middlebrook VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Middlebrook healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Middlebrook VA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Middlebrook VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
