They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Millwood VA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Millwood VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Millwood VA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Millwood VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Millwood VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Millwood home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Millwood VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Millwood VA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Millwood VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Millwood VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Millwood health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Millwood VA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Millwood VA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Carter Hall (Millwood, Virginia)

Carter Hall was the Millwood, Virginia, USA[3] estate of Lt. Col. Nathaniel Burwell (1750–1814). It is located in the upper Shenandoah Valley, off Virginia Route 255 northeast of Millwood. The estate includes a grand plantation house, a great lawn, and terraced gardens, and has panoramic views in all directions.[4] It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It served as headquarters for Stonewall Jackson during part of the American Civil War, and was raided and sacked by Union troops during the war.[4] Stonewall Jackson used another house, in Lexington, Virginia, as headquarters during 1861–1862,[6] and later established headquarters at Carter Hall during Fall of 1862. Jackson "declined George Burwell's invitation to stay in the house, camping instead with his men on the grounds. During his stay General Jackson permitted his surgeon, Dr. William McGuire, to perform a cataract operation on George Burwell on the portico."[4]

It was also a home for Burwell's cousin Edmund Randolph, who had been Governor of Virginia, United States Attorney General and later Secretary of State under George Washington, and was invited to pass his retirement with Colonel Burwell.[4]
