Ninde VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ninde VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ninde VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Ninde VA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Ninde VAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ninde VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Ninde home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Ninde VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ninde VA area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ninde VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Ninde VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Ninde health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Ninde VA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Ninde VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
