Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Richlands VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Richlands VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Richlands VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Richlands VA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Richlands VAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Richlands VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Richlands home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Richlands VA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Richlands VA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Richlands VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Richlands VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Richlands health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Richlands VA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Richlands VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Richlands, Virginia

The Clinch Valley Coal & Iron Company began to develop Richlands in 1890, and company officials hoped Richlands' readily available coal, iron, and timber might make it the "Pittsburgh of the South." The company abandoned its plans following the stock market crash of 1893.[6]

In February 1893, Richlands was the site of a mass lynching of five black railroad workers after it was alleged some of the men had robbed and beaten a white man. Four of the railroad workers were arrested and held in the Richlands jail, but the jailor was overpowered by a mob of white townspeople, including James Hurt, a magistrate and member of Richlands' town council, and James Crabtree, a prominent businessman, who removed the four men and hanged them from the same tree. A fifth black railroad worker was later found and lynched.[7]

Richlands is situated along the Clinch River just east of the Tazewell-Russell county line. Cedar Bluff borders Richlands to the southeast, and the community of Raven lies just to the west. U.S. Route 460 and Virginia State Route 67 both traverse Richlands.
