Stevensburg VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Stevensburg VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Stevensburg VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Stevensburg VA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Stevensburg VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Stevensburg VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Stevensburg home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Stevensburg VA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Stevensburg VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Stevensburg VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Stevensburg healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Stevensburg VA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Stevensburg VA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Stevensburg, Virginia

Stevensburg is a small rural unincorporated community located at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 663 in Culpeper County, Virginia, United States. Stevensburg is about 6.9 miles east of Culpeper. Stevensburg's ZIP code is 22741. The post office is headquartered in a building approximately 10 by 15 feet, thereby making it one of the smallest post offices in America. Floriculture is a prominent industry, as several large, commercial greenhouses are in operation here.

In about 1742, Salubria,[1] a large brick Georgian manor house, was built about one half mile southeast of the village now known as Stevensburg. Salubria was the birthplace of Admiral Cary Travers Grayson, personal physician to President Woodrow Wilson. In October 2000, Salubria was donated by the Grayson family to the Germanna Foundation for historic preservation.

Stevensburg was originally called York by the Quakers that lived in the area.[2] In 1782, the community was named Stevensburg in honor of General Edward Stevens, a revolutionary war hero from Culpeper.[3] During this time period, travelers often camped in the small ravines in the area, known as "bottoms." One ravine, ½ mile east of the village on the south side of present-day Route 3, gained considerable notoriety for "lewd behavior" (according to the Quakers), and came to be known as "Wicked Bottom."[3]
