Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Weyers Cave VA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Weyers Cave VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Weyers Cave VA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Weyers Cave VAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Weyers Cave VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Weyers Cave home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Weyers Cave VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Weyers Cave VA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Weyers Cave VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Weyers Cave VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Weyers Cave health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Weyers Cave VA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Weyers Cave VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
