Wise VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. The majority work in Wise VA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Wise VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Wise VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whichever state you elect to work in.

But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Wise home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wise VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Wise VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Wise health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Wise VA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wise VA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
