Sonographer Occupation Description

Anacortes WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Anacortes WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Anacortes WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Anacortes WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Washington or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Anacortes WAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Anacortes WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Anacortes home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Anacortes WA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Anacortes WA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Anacortes WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Anacortes WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Anacortes healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Anacortes WA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Anacortes WA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Anacortes, Washington

Anacortes /ˌænəˈkɔːrtəs/ is a city in Skagit County, Washington, United States. The name "Anacortes" is an adaptation of the name of Anne Curtis Bowman, who was the wife of early Fidalgo Island settler Amos Bowman.[5] Anacortes' population was 15,778 at the time of the 2010 census. It is one of two principal cities of and included in the Mount Vernon-Anacortes Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Anacortes is known for the Washington State Ferries dock and terminal serving Lopez Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, and San Juan Island, as well as Victoria, British Columbia (via Sidney, British Columbia) on Vancouver Island. There is also a Skagit County-operated ferry that serves Guemes Island, a residential island located across Guemes Channel, north of Anacortes.

In 1877, railroad surveyor and town founder Amos Bowman moved his family to the northern tip of Fidalgo Island. Bowman began promoting the area as an obvious terminus for the Northern Pacific Railway as it was built through the north Cascades to the Pacific. Bowman established the town's first newspaper, The Northwest Enterprise, to promote his vision of the New York of the West.[6]
