Sonographer Occupation Description

Cinebar WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cinebar WA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Cinebar WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Cinebar WA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cinebar WAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cinebar WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cinebar home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cinebar WA area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cinebar WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Cinebar WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Cinebar medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Cinebar WA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cinebar WA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
