Sonographer Work Summary

Mead WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mead WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Mead WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Mead WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Washington or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mead WAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Mead WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Mead home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mead WA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Mead WA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mead WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Mead WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Mead medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Mead WA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mead WA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
