Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Mesa WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mesa WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Mesa WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Mesa WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Washington or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mesa WAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mesa WA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Mesa home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Mesa WA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Mesa WA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mesa WA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Mesa WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Mesa health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Mesa WA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mesa WA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
