Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Satsop WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Satsop WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Satsop WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Satsop WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Satsop WAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Satsop WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Satsop home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Satsop WA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Satsop WA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Satsop WA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Satsop WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Satsop health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Satsop WA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Satsop WA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
