Sonographer Job Description

Thornton WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Thornton WA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Thornton WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Thornton WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Thornton WAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Thornton WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Thornton home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Thornton WA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Thornton WA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Thornton WA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Thornton WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Thornton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Thornton WA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Thornton WA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
