Sonographer Job Description

Tokeland WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Tokeland WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Tokeland WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Tokeland WA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Washington or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Tokeland WAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Tokeland WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Tokeland home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Tokeland WA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Tokeland WA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Tokeland WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Tokeland WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Tokeland healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Tokeland WA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Tokeland WA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
