Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Bancroft WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bancroft WV clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Bancroft WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Bancroft WV clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in West Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bancroft WVAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Bancroft WV outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bancroft home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Bancroft WV ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bancroft WV area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bancroft WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Bancroft WV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bancroft medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Bancroft WV home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bancroft WV area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
