Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Bruceton Mills WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bruceton Mills WV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Bruceton Mills WV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Bruceton Mills WV clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bruceton Mills WVAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bruceton Mills WV hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bruceton Mills home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Bruceton Mills WV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bruceton Mills WV area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bruceton Mills WV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Bruceton Mills WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bruceton Mills health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Bruceton Mills WV residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bruceton Mills WV area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
