Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Elizabeth WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Elizabeth WV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Elizabeth WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Elizabeth WV hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in West Virginia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Elizabeth WVAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elizabeth WV hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Elizabeth home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Elizabeth WV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Elizabeth WV area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Elizabeth WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have associations with Elizabeth WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Elizabeth medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Elizabeth WV residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elizabeth WV area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
