Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Enterprise WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Enterprise WV hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Enterprise WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Enterprise WV hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whichever state you decide to work in.

However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Enterprise home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Enterprise WV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Enterprise WV area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Enterprise WV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Enterprise WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Enterprise healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Enterprise WV home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Enterprise WV area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
