Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Friendly WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Friendly WV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Friendly WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Friendly WV clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in West Virginia or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Friendly WVAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Friendly WV outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Friendly home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Friendly WV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Friendly WV area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Friendly WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Friendly WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Friendly healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Friendly WV home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Friendly WV area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
