Most work in Harrisville WV hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Harrisville WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Harrisville WV clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Harrisville WV outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Harrisville home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Harrisville WV ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Harrisville WV area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Harrisville WV health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Harrisville WV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Harrisville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Harrisville WV residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Harrisville WV area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
