Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Leon WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Leon WV hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Leon WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Leon WV clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in West Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Leon WVAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Leon WV hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Leon home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Leon WV ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Leon WV area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Leon WV health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Leon WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Leon healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Leon WV home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Leon WV area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
