After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Prosperity WV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Prosperity WV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Prosperity healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Prosperity WV home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Prosperity WV area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
