Sonographer Work Summary

Belleville WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Belleville WI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Belleville WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Belleville WI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Belleville WIAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Belleville WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Belleville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Belleville WI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Belleville WI area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Belleville WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Belleville WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Belleville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Belleville WI residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Belleville WI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
