Cedarburg WI sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Cedarburg WI, it’s time to begin the process of picking a school. First, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many individuals will start by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Cedarburg WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Cedarburg WI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Cedarburg WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Cedarburg WI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cedarburg WIAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Cedarburg WI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Cedarburg home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Cedarburg WI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cedarburg WI area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cedarburg WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have associations with Cedarburg WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Cedarburg health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Cedarburg WI residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cedarburg WI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Cedarburg is a city in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Milwaukee and near the shores of Lake Michigan. The city is bordered by the village of Grafton to the east and the Town of Cedarburg elsewhere. The population was 11,412 at the 2010 census.

The first person to settle in the area was Joseph Gardenier, who built a log shanty on Cedar Creek, in what is now Hamilton. The shanty was his headquarters for surveying for the construction of the Green Bay Road.[6] Ludwig Wilhelm Groth (Ludwig Groth) is usually credited with being the first settler. He purchased land from the government on October 22, 1842, and began platting the banks of Cedar Creek. Frederick August Leuning, who immigrated to the area in 1843, built a cabin near Cedar Creek on what was later the east end of the city. He called the cabin "Cedarburg", which meant "the castle of cedars". Soon afterwards, he built the Columbia Mill on that site.[7] In December 1844 it was agreed that the town be named Cedarburg. Groth envisioned a village along Cedar Creek and parceled out his land for those who would in the future build businesses and settle permanently.[8] Groth eventually included all of north Cedarburg, everything above the interurban tracks to Bridge St. and from 3rd St. to Jefferson Ave. His untimely death in 1850 kept him from continuing land developments.[9]

In 1845, Frederick Hilgen and William Schroeder saw what Groth had envisioned. After writing to Hilgen's brother-in-law, C. Frederick Boerner, they found financing for further development. Boerner loaned Hilgen and Schroeder thousands of dollars at half the going rate to develop the village of Cedarburg. They had built a gristmill on Cedar Creek. After eleven years of operation, they replaced the original structure with the five-story, stone Cedarburg Mill, which became the focal point of the new community. Five dams and mills were eventually built along the creek in what are now the city and town of Cedarburg. The Hilgen Spring Park, begun in 1854, was a 74-acre (300,000 m2) resort, that attracted visitors from all over the Midwest.[6]
