Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Fond Du Lac WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Fond Du Lac WI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Fond Du Lac WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Fond Du Lac WI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Fond Du Lac WIAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Fond Du Lac WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Fond Du Lac home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Fond Du Lac WI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fond Du Lac WI area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fond Du Lac WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have associations with Fond Du Lac WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Fond Du Lac health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Fond Du Lac WI residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fond Du Lac WI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Fond du Lac, Wisconsin

Fond du Lac (/ˈfɒndəˌlæk/) is a city in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 43,021 at the 2010 census. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureau's Fond du Lac Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Fond du Lac County (2000 population: 97,296). Fond du Lac is the 342nd largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the United States. The Fond du Lac MSA and the Beaver Dam (city), Wisconsin Micropolitan Statistical Area, form the larger Fond du Lac-Beaver Dam Combined Statistical Area.

Native American tribes, primarily the Winnebagos but also the Potawatomi, Kickapoo, and Mascoutin lived or gathered in the area long before European explorers arrived. Although the identity of the first white man to explore the southern end of Lake Winnebago is uncertain, it was probably Claude-Jean Allouez, followed by French fur trappers.[10]

James Doty, a federal judge for the western part of the Michigan Territory, thought the land at the foot of Lake Winnebago might be a good location for a city, so he and his partners bought land in the area. In 1836, during the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature, John Arndt proposed making Fond du Lac the new capital.[11] The motion failed, and Doty convinced the legislature to choose Madison instead.
