Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Forestville WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Forestville WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Forestville WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Forestville WI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Forestville WIAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Forestville WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Forestville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Forestville WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Forestville WI area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Forestville WI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Forestville WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Forestville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Forestville WI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Forestville WI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
