New Glarus WI sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near New Glarus WI, the next step is to begin the process of picking a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And since some states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? A number of individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

New Glarus WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in New Glarus WI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

New Glarus WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through New Glarus WI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in New Glarus WIAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local New Glarus WI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your New Glarus home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask New Glarus WI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the New Glarus WI area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous New Glarus WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with New Glarus WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the New Glarus health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their New Glarus WI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the New Glarus WI area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    New Glarus, Wisconsin

New Glarus is a village in Green County, Wisconsin, United States at the intersection of Wisconsin Highways 69 and 39. It has a population of 2,172 according to the 2010 census. Since 2000 it has had a population growth of 2.9 percent. The village, and the town that surrounds it, were named after the canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland.[6] The community was founded in 1845 by immigrants from that canton and was incorporated in 1901.

In the early 1840s, after several years of failed crops and as food became scarce, much of the canton of Glarus in Switzerland found itself deep in poverty. With more workers than available jobs, the government of the canton saw emigration to America as a solution. Authorities established the Glarus Emigration Society in 1844, which offered loans to help residents purchase land in the New World. All other expenses associated with the voyage to America were to be paid by the emigrants themselves.[7] Men were offered 20 acres (81,000 m2) free of rent for ten years, after which they could own the land for a mere ten shillings per acre. Given the desperate economic conditions in Switzerland, 193 volunteers decided to leave their homeland to start anew in America.

In 1845 magistrates in Glarus dispatched two men, Nicolas Duerst and Fridolin Streiff, to find a suitable location for a colony in the New World. They were given $2600 and instructions to purchase land, build cabins, and prepare for the settlers to arrive the following spring.
